John Vanderhoef is currently pursuing his PhD in Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research interests include gender, race, and sexuality in video games, video game culture, and the video game industry. He also studies creative labor, cultural hierarchy, and power across media forms in addition to having a growing interest in general media industries studies. John received his M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's M.A. in Media Studies program in 2010 where he wrote about gendered discourses around the terms "hardcore" and "casual" in video games. At the moment, John is a Graduate Student Researcher for the Media Industries Project and an active member of the Media Fields Journal Editorial Collective. He loves video games, literature, poetry, and outer space.
