examines the genre of war films in Russian and Soviet cinema from the pre-revolutionary era to the present. Together, we explore films on Russian military conflicts from World War I to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Following the evolution of a wide range of cinematic styles through the historic peripeteia of Russian imperialist, Soviet, and post-Soviet societies, we explore how movies have shaped the country’s popular historical narratives. In addition to viewing and discussing a feature-length film each week, we discuss short readings on the history of Russian cinema. Students also write weekly posts on the viewing assignments, which will go towards the creation of a collective zine.
